About Jane...

In books, Author Jane Beckenham discovered dreams and hope, stories that inspired in her a love of romance and happy ever after.  Years later, after a blind date, Jane found her own true love and married him eleven months later.

Life has been a series of  ‘dreams’ for Jane.  Dreaming of learning to walk again after spending years in hospital. Dreaming of raising a family and subsequently flying to Russia to bring home her two adopted daughters. And of course, dreaming of writing.

Writing has become Jane’s addiction - and it sure beats housework.

The Interview...

Congratulations Jane, on being nominated as Author of the Year for 2010!

JB:  That is awesome. Thank you to everyone who voted for me and to you Cheryl for your constant support.

AA: I know you are a prolific author, with many books under your belt.  I also know you work at a day-job.  Please tell us how you find the time to write.

JB: Well writing is now my day job, but I do the after hours phones for a healthcare company 2 nights a week.  I’ve done this sort of work for years, and it was good when the children were younger.  However, over the last year I’ve had some serious health issues and so finding time and motivation to keep on writing has been a struggle, decimating my output at times, but I’m back up and running for the most part, though we’re just about to move house for the 1st time in 24 years – so you can imagine the packing involved with that!

AA:  Do you write your novels straight into the computer, or do you write longhand?

JB:  Oh definitely into the computer, I’m too lazy to write long hand, though occasionally I write a few notes on scraps of paper.

AA:  You have many romance novels published, and most of them are... spicy.  What lead you to write in this genre?

JB:  I think really it was a because I was a romance reader at heart.  The kids would roll their eyes when I came home from the library with a stack of romance books to read. But it was only when I got chatting on line in an interior decorating forum (my other absolute passion) when I met a writer there who encouraged me to start writing.  And here I am 12 years later.

AA:  Where do you get the inspiration for your stories?

JB:   Lots have come from dreams.  Sometimes whole books/scenes, or just a name and a scenario.  Once when I was in hospital for a month on absolute bed rest I watched these clouds passing by my bedroom window and wondered what would happen if an Angel fell off… 8 years later that was published as To Kiss an Angel

AA:  You have been incredibly blessed with the covers for your novels – they are all fantastic.  My personal favourite is He’s the One, but I love all your covers, including your latest – In Love with the Sheik.  How much do you think the cover impacts sales of your novels?

JB: Thanks Cheryl.   For me cover art is a huge priority. I have to adore my covers. And for the most I have.  My coming novel Secrets and Seduction, I am so pleased with.  The American publisher managed to get a nighttime view of Auckland which is where the book is set.

I think cover is hugely important.  It’s the first visual for a reader, and if that reader is looking at a book of an author she doesn’t know then the cover MUST hook them in.

AA:  What do we have to look forward to in regard to future Jane Beckenham novels? Can you give us a sneak peak?

JB: Two new releases so far coming this year.

In May – A Traitor’s Heart – is my first Regency and I’m thrilled it’s being released.  It’s a book I really enjoyed writing.

Here’s the blurb.

What price infamy, in a duel between treason and love?

The price of success is treason. Catriona Fraser could ill afford a liaison with Lord Nicholas Burford, her position is too precarious. Should she fail it would forfeit her brother's life. There can be only one winner, but success may prove a failure when tangled with lies and deception and the fear of loving.

Mixing the life of the slums and the world of London's rich, A Traitor's Heart is a test for two socially different worlds, and whether love can survive.

Also, in June, through Samhain is Secrets and Seduction.  A contemporary set here in Auckland, but also in the olive growing industry and pitting (pardon the pun) a widow who has been decimated by her dead husband’s lies against her brother in law who is intent on righting perceived wrongs when he really doesn’t know what is truth, or lies.

Here’s the blurb.

He wants to hate her, but a little lust wouldn’t hurt…

The only emotion Leah Grainger can muster when thinking of her dead husband is relief. Until she learns his gambling debt threatens her beloved farm and the child she wanted to protect from the rootless existence she grew up with.

The last straw? Her husband’s brother demands a meeting. When she charges into his office to tell him she won’t let another Grainger screw up her life, the startlingly handsome, former oil rig wildcatter goes for the jugular. He’s claimed legal guardianship of her daughter, bought her mortgage…and he’s moving in.

The final email Mac received from his suicidal brother blamed Leah for everything. If it’s the last thing he does, he plans to protect his niece. Even if it means using his millions to gain the upper hand. And hardening his heart against the beautiful Leah’s protests of innocence.

Yet something seems off. Leah is nothing like the uncaring woman his brother described. She’s warm, loving…and when a new threat to her child surfaces and she reaches out to him in need, his body won’t let him say no. Even when her last secret forces him to make a decision that exposes his most closely guarded possession. His heart.

Jane, thank you so much for your time and letting us inside your world.  And again, congratulations on your win as AussieAuthors Author of the Year 2010.

JB: Thanks so much Cheryl. I am absolutely delighted with this success.  Best wishes for 2011.
