Q. Tell us about you, the author. A. I write under two names – Janet Davies with Cerridwen Press and Amarinda Jones for Ellora’s Cave. The reason? My editor thought it would be a good idea to differentiate between the two genres of romance and erotic romance. Even though I am identifiable as the same person it always makes me smile when someone sends a fan letter to my alter ego Amarinda.
Q. What is your website/ blog address? A. www.freewebs.com/janetdavies http://amarindajones.blogspot.com/
Q. When did your passion for writing begin? A. It started when I wrote an Anzac essay at primary school and won $5.00 when I was eight years old. It continued onto high school when one of my teachers remarked, after reading one of my history essays, "You should write women’s fiction." I am not sure that was a compliment but here I am writing romance novels. Maybe she was psychic.
Q. Can you tell us what your typical "writing" day is like? A. There is no typical day. I work full time so I snatch time before work, after work and during work – work just hasn’t figured that out yet. When I write on the weekend everyone knows not to ring me or approach me as I am in another world.
Q. Do you write full time? A. I would love to write full time and I am hoping that day is just around the corner.
Q. Can you tell us a little about your books? A. My next release is through Ellora’s Cave on July 20th. It’s called Thief of Mine and it’s about Stella Rowallan who gets caught up, against her better judgement, with Kit Kincaid, bad boy thief. He has stolen an ancient idol from a witch who wants revenge. Stella falls for the thief but of course true love never runs smoothly. I really enjoyed writing this one as there is something about bad boys that appeals to me.
Q. Who published your books and what’s special about them? A. I have three books published by Cerridwen Press. My editor suggested I try writing for their sister company Ellora’s Cave. I now have eight under contract with them. I am thankful for that advice as I seem to have a knack at writing erotic romance or ‘romantica’. What is good about this publisher is that they publish happily ever after stories that have a modern edge that I believe appeals to readers. They also keep accepting my submissions so I like them for that.
Q. Tell us the inspiration behind the stories you write. A. Real people inspire me. Something someone says or does or thinks can set me off on a story. Also a lot of my dreams have become published stories. I often awake in the middle of the night and scribble something down.
Q. Can you tell us ways you are promoting your book? Have they been successful? A. The most successful ways so far has cost me nothing but time. I have both a website and a blog that were free to set up and the most interest is generated from there. I also have made friends with lots of authors and have swapped links with them. Networking is invaluable.
Q. Who are your favorite authors and why do they inspire you? A. I love Janet Evanovich as her Stephanie Plum characters make me laugh as they are crazy and so identifiable to me. I also like books by Robert Goddard as they are so complex and nothing is as it seems. As for romance Karen Marie Moning and her Highlander series is excellent.
Q. Do you have a mentor? A . My mother was my mentor. She always believed all her ducks were swans and because of her, I believe it too. I always go into everything believing I can do it. Writing is the same.
Q. What future projects do you have in the works? A. I’m just about to send book eleven off to my Editor. It’s a time travel romance. Then I have two more planned - one about an old flame and another about submission.
Q. Can you give aspiring authors some words of advice towards getting published? A. Be annoyingly persistent and do not give up. I wrote book reviews for a while to see what was being published and by who. I found that invaluable. Look at what is on the market and direct your energy there. And never ever give up. If you get rejected, so what? Have another go. If I can do it, anyone can.
Q. What is one thing about your life that you think is important, but nobody asks? A. Interesting question – my answer would be that people ask what they need to know and if I want them to know more I tell them.
Q. Tell us where we can go to buy your books? A. Either at www.ellorascave.com or www.cerridwenpress.com or they will be in print very soon at all the good book stores.
