Interview with
Margaret Tanner

Firstly, tell us about Margaret Tanner the person:

Margaret: I live in Melbourne, which is Australia’s 2nd largest city. I have three grown up sons. In January I became a grandmother for the first time when one of my sons and his wife had a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Grace. I work part time as a medical typist, and the rest of the time I like to write. It is my hobby and also my passion.

A multiple choice question: have you always been a writer and if not, what did you do before and what got you started on writing?

Margaret: Yes, I have always been a writer even as a child I loved it.

Tell us about your genre:

Margaret: I mainly write historical romance, although I have written three contemporary romances. My great love is writing romance set against an historical background. I love Australian history, particularly the period of the 1st World War. I have made several pilgrimages to the battlefields in France and Belgium, also Gallipoli a truly poignant experience.

The bragging part, tell us what you’ve written, what books you have out: how many, the titles, other stories, articles etc.

Margaret: 2007 is going to be a good year for me as I will have seven books published from Lovestruck Books – Forbidden Love, March. Holly and the Millionaire, June. The English Rose, July. A Rose in No-Man’s Land, September. Cardinal Sin, October. White Picket Fence and Babies, November. Baby Maker, December.

From Whiskeycreek Press – Devil’s Ridge, May, 2007. In February 2008 – Savage Utopia, with the sequel, Stolen Birthright out in September, 2008.

What gives you the inspiration to write, where do the ideas come from?

Margaret: I have a vivid imagination, and a love of history. The two things combine to give me plenty of ideas.

Is there any particular inspiration behind your latest book?

Margaret: My first book, Forbidden Love, which is out in March is very dear to my heart as the parts relating to World War 2, in Singapore and Malaya, are loosely based on my late father’s wartime experiences. I had access to letters he wrote to my mother (who was his fiancée at the time), plus the stories that he told us as children.

Do you ever run out of ideas, or suffer from ‘writers block’?

Margaret: No, never. Sometimes I think I have too many ideas buzzing around in my head. It is hard to get them all down on paper.

Do you have a website?

Margaret: Yes. http://go.to/margtanner My website has an historical bent. It is simple, easy to follow and not cluttered up with irrelevant information.

What do you do to promote yourself?

Margaret: I hope to utilize my website and plan to do book signings, newspaper reviews and promotional talks.

So what is your routine for writing?

Margaret: I mainly write when I am alone during the day, or when the family have gone to bed in the evening. I haven’t done much promoting as yet, but that is ready to change within the next few days.

Of course you’d tell us you’re always learning; how, where and what do you do for this?

Margaret: Conferences and workshops are two of my greatest learning tools. I love interacting with other writers at the conferences, and it is a good chance to get some net working in as well. The local library is another favourite learning place of mine.

Where can we get copies of your books?

Margaret: Lovestruck on line book store. (http://lovestruckbooks.com), Ingrams, Baker & Taylor, Amazon. Whiskeycreek Press on line book store (www.whiskeycreekpress.com) and Fictionwise carry my books.

And the long-term goals for Margaret Tanner?

Margaret: To write at least one best seller. To have a continual flow of books published. To get positive feedback from my readers.
