The Gemlef is another book in a series by the Australian
author A.S. Finney, which deals with the
entity known as the Tefugart. The Gemlef is
a spaceship that has powers beyond the
imagination of humans. It is as though it
is a living thing that is indestructible.
The book starts with the Tefugart taking on a physical
presence and imparting to a small group of four people,
supernatural powers. This leads the group to form an
alliance with the Gemlef spaceship and a group of
aliens, the Terasky’s. This alliance leads them to Mars
and to do battle with a wide variety of phenomenon
throughout the book.
The characters Sarah Hawthorne, Bill Fry, Zoe castle and
her assistant Jack all play a pivotal role in the plot.
Sarah emerges as the saviour of the earth with her
daughter Gemma taking on an even more important role for
the preservation of life. But yet again, as with A.S.
Finney’s other books the story fails to deliver a
tightly bound plot.
Yet despite the books many structural faults I found it to
be an improvement over previous works by this author.
