The third book in the Janna
Mysteries series, Lilies for Love, sees
Janna take refuge in the Wiltune Abbey. She
is seeking the safety the abbey provides
from the wrath of Lord Robert Babescoche.
Yet even in this hallowed sanctuary the
evils of the outside world manage to seep
in.
Mus, a villien employed by
Lord Robert Babescoche attacks Janna. The
attack takes place during the harvesting of
some crops near the abbey. This bold
attempt on her life is thwarted by Will the
Abbess’ bailiff. Evidence brought before a
court run by the local Sheriff, is enough to
convict Mus of his crime.
Lord Hugh, Lady Alice’s
nephew is also attacked at the local fair.
His friend Anselm wanted Hugh to marry his
sister Emma, but her heart lay elsewhere. A
gambling debt mixed in with his anger about
his sister’s refusal to marry Hugh sets a
chain of events in motion that leads to
Anselm’s death.
Janna sets about solving the
crime as well as making herself a matchmaker
for Sister Agnes. Sister Agnes and Will the
bailiff have an attraction towards each
other. But Sister Agnes lets her
disfigurement rule her emotions and she is
afraid to follow her heart’s desire. The
abbey is her only home and a refuge from a
cruel unloving world.
I found the flow of the
storyline in this book did not flow as
smoothly as the first two books of the
series. The deceit and treachery that
followed Janna to the abbey, as she prepared
herself for the next leg of her quest to
seek the truth about her mother and find her
father mixed well within the plot. But then
the love match with Will the bailiff and
Sister Agnes took over as a separate story
in the last six chapters of the book. To me
this lessened the impact of the main story
that dealt with how Janna extracted herself
from the dangerous situation she found
herself in.
Overall the writing style
still has the clarity and rhythm of the
first two books. Fans of the Janna
Mysteries will still find Lilies for Love
a book well worth reading.
